“Picking someone so controversial”: FIFA under fire as furious fans threaten to boycott 2026 World Cup over Katy Perry

Katy Perry became a trending topic after reports claimed fans threatened to boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening events over her involvement. Online criticism labeled the decision “controversial,” sparking heated arguments across sports and entertainment communities.

FIFA is facing a growing wave of backlash after reports revealed that Katy Perry is expected to headline part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup opening festivities — a decision that has triggered outrage across social media and soccer communities worldwide.

What was supposed to be a massive entertainment announcement quickly spiraled into controversy, with angry fans accusing FIFA of choosing “the wrong celebrity” for one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

According to reports, Perry is scheduled to appear during the opening ceremony events surrounding the United States’ opening World Cup match against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium.

But within hours of the announcement, hashtags calling for a boycott of the opening ceremony began spreading online.

Picking someone so controversial is insane,” one viral post reportedly read, while another user wrote, “FIFA should focus on football, not celebrity drama.”

Much of the criticism appears tied to Perry’s recent controversies and polarizing media attention over the past year. Online debates intensified after renewed discussion surrounding old allegations, celebrity feuds, and backlash connected to her public appearances and political associations.

The controversy has become especially explosive because FIFA is already under pressure over several other entertainment-related decisions tied to the 2026 tournament. Recent announcements involving BTS, Madonna, Shakira, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa have also sparked heated fan wars and criticism online.

Despite the outrage, many supporters defended Perry, arguing that the backlash is overblown and pointing out her decades-long global popularity and history of stadium performances.

She’s literally one of the biggest pop stars in the world,” one fan posted. “People complain about everything.”

Others believe FIFA intentionally selected globally recognizable music stars to maximize worldwide attention ahead of what will be the largest World Cup in history, featuring 48 national teams across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

So far, FIFA has not publicly responded to the boycott threats, and Perry herself has remained largely silent about the backlash.

Still, the controversy is rapidly becoming one of the most talked-about entertainment stories connected to the tournament — and with the World Cup still months away, many believe the online debate is only just beginning.
