For years, the claim has circulated online that actress Cameron Diaz once bought marijuana from rapper Snoop Dogg when the two were students at the same high school. One version of the claim, posted (archived) by X user @notgwendalupe on July 4, 2024, had received around 3 million views, 49,000 likes and 2,000 reposts at the time of this writing.

The claim has popped up on X, Facebook, TikTok, and elsewhere around the internet for more than a decade. In 2013, when a Reddit user posted “TIL Cameron Diaz was in high school with Snoop Dogg, and Snoop Dogg was her drug dealer” to the r/todayilearned subreddit, the most upvoted response read, “TIL this is posted on Reddit approximately every 35 days.”

The claim originated with Diaz herself during an interview on the Jan. 19, 2011, episode of comedian George Lopez’s talk show “Lopez Tonight,” which aired on TBS from 2009 to 2011. In a recording of Diaz’s interview uploaded to YouTube by an unofficial fan account named @LopezTonight, Diaz discussed attending high school with Snoop Dogg starting around the 1:03 timestamp.

Diaz made the claim that she purchased marijuana from the future rapper around the video’s 1:22 timestamp, saying, “I’m pretty sure I bought weed from him. I had to have!”

Apparent confirmation of Diaz’s account came a few months later, when Snoop Dogg appeared as a guest on a March 31, 2011, episode of “Lopez Tonight.” Starting around the 3:11 timestamp in the below video of the interview, which was also uploaded to YouTube by the @LopezTonight fan account, Lopez played the clip from Diaz’s interview in which she claimed to have bought weed from Snoop Dogg in high school.

At the end of that clip, around the 3:54 timestamp, Snoop Dogg laughed and said, “I might’ve sold her some of that white girl weed.” By “white girl weed,” he went on to explain, he meant “sticks and stems and seeds” — in other words, the least-desirable parts of the cannabis plant, at least for recreational consumption.

Was the claim genuine? One part of it, namely that Diaz and Snoop Dogg attended high school together, is verifiably true. As the Los Angeles Times has confirmed, Diaz graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School in Long Beach, California, in 1990. Snoop Dogg — born Calvin Broadus Jr. — was a member of the same school’s class of 1989; as the Long Beach Press-Herald reported, he hosted a lavish 30-year reunion party for his classmates in 2019.

The other part of the claim, that Diaz purchased marijuana from Snoop Dogg while the two were students, is less straightforward to confirm. As detailed above, Diaz herself was the first to make the claim, and Snoop Dogg, the only other person involved in the claim, did not deny selling marijuana to Diaz when asked about his own recollections in 2011.

Snoop Dogg seemingly gave stronger confirmation of the claim in a 2019 episode of radio personality Angie Martinez’s We TV interview series “Untold Stories of Hip Hop.” As can be seen in the below video clip from the episode, which Martinez shared to her public Facebook page in 2022, Martinez asked Snoop Dogg whether the claim he “dealt weed to Cameron Diaz in high school” was “fact or rumor.” The rapper responded that the claim is a “fact,” but provided no further information.

However, Snoop Dogg used hedging language when he initially described his memories of the alleged scenario to Lopez back in 2011, saying that he “might’ve” sold the actress some weed — not that he definitely did. Likewise, in her interview with Lopez, Diaz said she was “pretty sure” the sale happened, not that she was completely sure. In the years since, Diaz has never publicly claimed to be fully certain that a transaction of this sort took place between the two of them.

Snopes has reached out to representatives of both Diaz and Snoop Dogg for comment, and will update this story if we hear back. For now, we’ve rated this claim as “Research in Progress.”
