HEARTBREAKING: A man who had been missing since 1997, was unexpectedly discovered thanks to Google Earth and…. see more
In 2019, there was a man who used to live in the Grand Isles community in Wellington, Florida. While looking through Google Earth to see his old hometown, he noticed something unusual in one of the satellite images: a car submerged in a pond.
This discovery was the key to solving a long-standing missing person case. The car had been visible on Google Earth since at least 2007, but this person only thought of it recently. He immediately contacted a neighbor in the area, who apparently used a drone to confirm that there was indeed a white car in the pond behind his house.
The neighbor then reported it to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. On August 28, 2019, police arrived at the scene and found a car that was already filled with calcium due to being submerged in water for most of the time.
Inside the car, they discovered bones. The bones were eventually identified as belonging to William Moldt, who had been missing since November 7, 1997. William Moldt, who was 40 years old at the time, was last seen leaving an adult nightclub in Lantana, Florida.
He had called his girlfriend around 9:30 p.m. to say that he would be home soon, but he never arrived. Although Moldt was not known to be a frequent drinker, he had consumed a few drinks that night. Witnesses reported that he did not appear to be drunk when he left the club alone.
The pond where the car was found had been there since Moldt disappeared, when the housing complex was still under construction.
The exact cause of his fall into the pool is unclear, but the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office speculates he may have lost control of his car.
