Who is Quez Watkins? Chiefs targeting speedster to bolster Mahomes’ offense
Fresh from clinching their third Super Bowl victory in five years, the Kansas City Chiefs are poised for another title defense campaign in 2024. However, they face the pressing task of shoring up their roster, particularly in the wide receiver department after a lackluster showing in the 2023 season.
Watkins’ potential under Mahomes
After adding Marquise “Hollywood” Brown on a one-year deal, rumors have been swirling around the defending champions, suggesting their interest in signing Quez Watkins, the speedy wide receiver from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Watkins, known for his electrifying pace and ability to stretch the field, could inject a new dimension into the Chiefs’ offensive arsenal.
Despite a couple of underwhelming seasons with the Eagles, Watkins remains an intriguing prospect for the Chiefs.
At just 25 years old, his best years could still lie ahead, especially in an offensive system led by the dynamic Patrick Mahomes.
With the departure of Tyreek Hill in 2022 and a slew of issues plaguing the unit in the previous season, Kansas City is in dire need of playmakers who can capitalize on Mahomes’ arm talent.
Sirianni on Watkins: His speed changes the game
While Watkins may not command top billing in the Chiefs’ receiving hierarchy, his potential to stretch defenses and make explosive plays downfield makes him a valuable addition, particularly in a league increasingly reliant on deep passing connections.
Last season, while the Eagles were going through injury issues in their wide receiver room, head coach Nick Sirianni, lauded Watkins’ game-changing speed, emphasizing its impact beyond his individual performance.

“Understand this with Quez. His speed changes the game, and not just because it’s going to him,” coach Nick Sirianni said of the free-agent receiver. “It’s going to open up the rest of the field, and you can’t always predict where the ball is going to go. The defense obviously – there are things that happen where the defense dictates where the ball is going to go,”Sirianni remarked, highlighting Watkins’ potential to create opportunities for his teammates and disrupt defensive strategies.
As the Chiefs navigate the complexities of free agency, Watkins represents a calculated gamble-an opportunity to add depth and versatility to their roster without breaking the bank.
While their primary focus may remain on retaining key players and addressing pressing needs through the draft, the allure of Watkins’ game-changing speed could prove too enticing to pass up.
